Empathy not Sympathy

Thank you to Colonel Graeme Wearmouth (86-90) OBE for returning to Merchiston to speak at Merchiston's Whole School Remembrance Service on Sunday. Col Wearmouth's theme was about the importance of sympathy but the overriding importance of empathy if Remembrance is to continue to be a forward looking and living event. Many have been in touch since Sunday to comment on how moving and beautifully constructed the Service was.

School Chaplain, Nick Blair said: "In my opinion there are four hallmarks of quality of a School Remembrance Service.

1. It needs to set the right tone
2. It needs to honour personal sacrifice
3. It needs to run smoothly
4. It needs, most importantly, to engage with the pupils

For me, and everyone I have talked to so far, Merchiston's Remembrance Service on Sunday ticked all 4 boxes."

There is No Place Like Home

Tommy Palacios (04-09)
got in touch after the Class of '09's ten-year reunion on Saturday to say:

"Reunion was brilliant, fantastic to see so many old faces and in particular see the great shape the School is in. Was good to see Mr Blair and Mr Rossiter around too as well as Meena in the Dining Hall (who kindly fed a few hungry boys!). I'm now being tasked with organising get-togethers more frequently."

The Class of '99 are celebrating their twenty-year reunion tomorrow, I look forward to sharing an update next week!

Rugby Wins

Fantastic to see that Fantastic to see that Kentaro Noguchi (81-87) caught up with some more of his classmates who were out in Japan for the World Cup, he reported:

"Three Merchistonians met in an Irish pub in Tokyo on the night of the Final. Fraser Burn (77-82) and David Jobling-Purser (82-87) were part of the dad's army that came with Alnwick RFC U16s tour to Japan. Peter Walton's (80-87) old club - which we all know it is in Scotland really. The tourists experienced many new things and had a great time in Japan except for the final result, perhaps. All in all, rugby was the winner. Wish you were here, Peter."

Ace News

Congratulations to David Brewer, Director of The Tennis Academy, who will be leaving Merchiston at the end of the Autumn Term to take up a post as a touring professional with one of Great Britain's leading female tennis players.

In his time at Merchiston, David has built on The Tennis Academy brand and the successes of the School teams and individuals speak for themselves. Best of luck to David as he and his family embark on what will be a very different journey beyond Merchiston.

Merchiston Team Win Again

Congratulations to the Merchiston Chef Team that won the overall Food Category Golden Whisk Award. The criteria for the award is based on food improvement and food excellence. Their contribution to the #Fishtales campaign, based on providing healthy and sustainable fresh meals on a weekly basis, was their point of excellence.

That's all for this week's newsletter.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Royal Scots Club from 7pm this evening. Photographs will be shared next week!

As always, we hope you have enjoyed reading and if you have any stories of your own, please do get in touch!

Best wishes
