Typhoon Saturday

Before the Scotland v Japan match John McKean (75-81) was enjoying drinks at the Oak Bar at the Grand Hyatt in Tokyo, oblivious to the typhoon outside. Randomly, John discovered he was not the only Merchistonian present - Aly Murray (73-78) who lives in Hong Kong and Hamish Mackenzie (74-79) who, like John, studied Law at Aberdeen University, were also locked in the pub. There are definitely worse places to be stuck!

Have you had an unexpected Merchistonian meet up?

Merchistonians Next Top Model

Thanks to Fergus Thain (87-90) for sharing this fine photo of Barry Wingate (85-90) sporting the new Merchistonian beanie hat. If you would like to get your hands on a hat and be more like Barry, get in touch.

Making their Mark

Watch Jamie Dobie (12-19) and Stafford McDowall (14-16), two previous 1XV Captains, link up to create this searing break. Great skill and speed.

"Tom Gordon might have put the finishing touches on Glasgow Warriors' 7th try, but it was Jamie Dobie who set it up. What a phenomenal run this was to pin Zebre back on their own try line.

Sam Hidalgo-Clyne (06-11) signs for Exeter Chiefs on a two-year deal.

"The peripatetic career of Scotland cap Sam Hidalgo-Clyne has taken another unexpected twist with the 26-year-old-scrum-half headed to Sandy Park next season, where he will join up with Stuart Hogg and Jonny Gray on the Exeter Chiefs playing roster"

Brilliant to see Rory Stewart-Cox (13-19) making this try saving tackle to beat Leeds Beckett 19-18. What an outstanding achievement, playing for Durham University 1XV straight out of School.

Congratulations to David Cherry (02-09) who pens a new deal with Edinburgh.

"Edinburgh have been handed a boost ahead of Friday night's Guinness PRO14 match against Connacht with the re-signing of hooker David Cherry"

Merchistonian Business Network

Are you able to support a Merchistonian starting out on their journey? Please get in touch if you are able to offer any support to Lomond MacPherson (15-17).

"I left Merchiston in 2017 and have been studying Business studies at Edinburgh Napier University whilst playing rugby for Watsonians. I'm going into my third year after the summer and part of my course allows me to work within a business for a year as an intern. I was just wondering if there are any Merchistonians in the Edinburgh area that could help me find a firm for my internship."

Lomond is looking to gain as much experience and learn as many new skills as possible. Please get in touch if you are able to offer any support.

Headman - Old Boy

The Headmaster enjoyed catching up with Magnus Bradbury (11-13) last weekend at the Pre-Calcutta Cup Dinner at Murrayfield.

A Question of Spot

Did anyone else spot Zach Mercer (13-15) on A Question of Sport last Friday night?

If not, you can watch catch up on BBC iPlayer. Great to see you doing so well Zach.

Thanks for Visiting

Chris Hill (00-07) popped in to watch the B Rugby Squad take on Peebles High School in the February sunshine. When Chris left school, he was coached by Chalmers East Housemaster Bruce Aitchison and they have kept in touch ever since.

Chris was keen to visit to catch up with his old coach and see how things were going at his old school. Chris enjoyed a tour of the school, which brought back a lot of memories, including bumping into some of his former teachers. We hope to see Chris back again soon.

Fond Farewells

It was so special to see James Gell (02-12) back to play the pipes alongside Pipe Major, Gordon Campbell, and two current pupils, to give a true Merchiston send off to June Hogg, Catering Duty Manager.

After 18 years committed service to Merchiston Castle School, June retired last week and will be sorely missed by boys, staff and parents. Thanks go to June for everything that she has done over the years.

Love Your Business

Cameron Johnston (00-04) is the speaker at the next Love Your Business networking event on Thursday, 27th February at Black Ivy.

Cameron is a former rugby international and now second-in-command for rehab in Scotland for the Army, Navy and RAF, who has invented the first-of-its-kind heat and ice recovery compression - the RIIXO Recovery Cuff. Following a life-threatening rugby injury Cameron decided to combine his experience in sport, physiotherapy and the military to develop a product which would help speed up muscle recovery in sport as well as aiding soft tissue recovery after injury. Cameron will share the story of his recovery from a broken back and the journey which led him to invent his innovative recovery cuff, from research and testing the market to getting the right brand image and securing investment.

Happy Birthday Udrafter

Congratulations to Luke (07-09) and Darryl Morrow (08-10) who launched Udrafter one year ago! They have had a busy year, raising £300k in their crowdfunding campaign and taking on 3 new employees. Well done for making the dream reality.

"We are 1 year old today! What a surreal feeling to be 12 months on from an idea in our heads to a real-life product. I could rattle on about the 'rollercoaster ride' but I'd personally like to thank our core values: Relentless Execution and Extreme Ownership. Without these I would still be saying 'remember that idea I had'?"

Merchiston Sevens 2020

Come back to watch some great rugby at the Merchiston Sevens from Thursday 12 - Sunday 15 March 2020.

Lent Reading

School Chaplain Nick Blair has been in touch with this offer:

"Each Lent Term, I offer boys, staff, parents and Merchistonians a daily reading and thought throughout Lent, starting this year on 25 February. This is received by email each morning. It is purely my own thoughts, but about 200 folks have signed up each year. This year I am looking at the writings of Paul.

If you would like to receive this daily Lent message, please email me at chaplaincy@merchiston.co.uk and I will add you to the mailing list.

Lastly, I am aware that this email goes to people of goodwill from a variety of all faiths and none. Please feel free to contact me on any matter of spiritual or pastoral concern at any time.

Best wishes Rev Nick Blair MA BD PGCYS Accred. BUS"
